This virtual lecture examines the role of women artists and the portrayal of domestic life in Civil War-era American painting, with a special focus on the artistic ambitions of Little Women's Amy March. Kerry Mills will explore how the novel reflects and challenges contemporary views on gender, creativity, and social expectations, placing Amy’s journey within the broader context of women’s artistic endeavors in the 19th century.

Through an analysis of historical artworks and cultural narratives, this discussion will highlight the challenges faced by women artists of the time and the ways in which their work contributed to early feminist discourse.

This session is part of Mary Baldwin University's Lifelong Learning Series and is open to alumni, students, and community members.
